Nick Hughes started his career in the Royal Navy where he trained as a marine engineer and served on a variety of ships, before becoming the chief engineer for the RN’s mine clearance and diving branch. After leaving the navy he worked as a research engineer, developing maritime and environmental equipment. Nick joined the MAIB as an Inspector in 2006 and was nominated as the branch’s lead inspector for lifeboat related topics in 2007. Since then, he has supported the Industry Lifeboat Group, led by the International Chamber of Shipping, in identifying areas where the regulations for lifeboat equipment can be improved to help prevent future accidents. Nick now leads one of MAIB’s teams of Inspectors, responding to accidents in UK territorial waters and on UK registered ships worldwide.
